He was born on March 17, 1975, in Chennai, India, and is the youngest son of late actor Rajkumar and his wife Parvathamma Rajkumar. Puneeth Rajkumar started his acting career at the age of six as a child artist in the film "Premada Kanike" in 1976, which was directed by his father.

Puneeth Rajkumar completed his schooling at Sadhana Vidya Mandir in Vijayanagar, Bangalore, and later pursued his graduation in commerce at Baldwin Methodist College, Bangalore.
