Jason Behrendorff
Jason Behrendorff is a left-arm fast-medium bowler from Australia who has gained a reputation for his swing bowling and accuracy. Born on April 20, 1990, in New South Wales, Australia, Behrendorff has been a part of the Australian cricket team as well as the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises.
Early Career:
Behrendorff began playing cricket at a young age and was initially a batting all-rounder. However, after being inspired by his elder brother, he shifted his focus to bowling. He made his debut for Western Australia in 2011 and impressed everyone with his swing bowling, leading to his selection in the Australian T20 squad.
International Career:
Behrendorff made his international debut for Australia in 2017 in a T20 match against India. He immediately made an impact by taking 4 wickets for just 21 runs, and was instrumental in Australia’s victory. He continued to play in the T20 format for Australia and made his One Day International (ODI) debut against India in 2019. Behrendorff's best performance in an ODI came in the 2019 World Cup against England, where he took 5 wickets for just 44 runs.
IPL Career:
Behrendorff made his IPL debut in 2018, representing the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise. He played a total of 5 matches and took 5 wickets at an economy rate of 8.68. Although his performance was not outstanding, it was good enough for him to retain his spot in the team for the next season.
In 2019, Behrendorff played 5 matches for the Mumbai Indians and took 5 wickets at an economy rate of 8.68. However, he had to share the new ball with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malinga, which limited his opportunities to take wickets.
In 2020, Behrendorff was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise for INR 4 crore but unfortunately, he had to pull out of the tournament due to injury. Despite his absence, KKR went on to reach the playoffs.
In the 2021 IPL auction, Behrendorff was bought by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise for his base price of INR 1 crore. He played just one match for the team and took 1 wicket at an economy rate of 10.50.
Playing Style:
Behrendorff is known for his ability to swing the ball both ways, and his accuracy in hitting the right areas on the pitch. He generates good pace and is effective in the powerplay overs. His height of 6'6'' allows him to extract bounce from the pitch, making it difficult for the batsmen to score freely. He has a natural angle that makes it difficult for the right-handed batsmen to face him.
Off the field:
Behrendorff is a qualified physiotherapist and has been involved in cricket even during his studies. He was also a part of the Western Australia cricket team that won the domestic one-day cup in 2016-17. Behrendorff is also known for his charitable work, having shaved his head for the McGrath Foundation, which raises funds for breast cancer awareness.
Conclusion:
Jason Behrendorff is a talented left-arm fast bowler who has represented the Australian cricket team as well as various IPL franchises. He is known for his swing bowling and accuracy, and is effective in the powerplay overs. While his IPL career hasn't been as illustrious as his international career, he has shown flashes of brilliance and has the potential to be a valuable asset for any team.
